Introduction
A versatile braai spice blend with warm spices, garlic, and cayenne. Measures given by volume and by weight.
Ingredients
By Volume (makes ~1/2 cup)
- 5 tsp salt (crush flakes if using)
- 2.5 tsp ground black pepper
- 2.5 tsp paprika
- 2.5 tsp crushed garlic powder
- 2.5 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (or chili powder)
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground allspice (pimento)
By Weight
- 25 g salt
- 5 g black pepper
- 5 g paprika
- 8 g garlic powder
- 4 g ground coriander
- 2 g ground (cayenne or chile) pepper
- 2 g ground cumin
- 2 g ground cloves
- 2 g ground nutmeg
- 2 g ground allspice
Directions
- Combine all spices thoroughly. Crush salt flakes if using to distribute evenly. Store airtight.
Tips
- Taste and adjust cayenne for heat level; use fresh spices for best aroma.
- Keep away from light/heat to preserve oils; shake before use.
Optional Additions
- Add a pinch of brown sugar for caramelization if desired on grilled meats.
